Destination Visit – The Beautiful Danube River Cruise 2026: Melk Abbey, Budapest and Vienna
Last week, I swapped my desk for a riverboat, joining our Danube river cruise aboard the MS Beethoven with a private group. I came back with my phone full of photos and far too many stories to fit into one conversation, so I've decided to share three of the days that stuck with me most: Melk Abbey, Budapest and Vienna.

Melk Abbey: baroque grandeur on the Danube
My first proper day on board began with the ship gliding gently toward Melk, and nothing quite prepares you for that first sight of the abbey rising above the town. Perched high on some rocks overlooking the river, Melk Abbey is one of the grandest baroque complexes anywhere in the world, and the morning tour took me through its library and church interiors.
What I loved most was the contrast that followed. After the abbey, the itinerary continued with a walking tour of Dürnstein, a small town of cobbled lanes that felt a world away from the abbey's scale.
Budapest: panoramic views and traditional Hungarian culture
My next stop was Budapest. It has to be one of Europe's most striking capitals, weaving between the hills of Buda and the grand boulevards of Pest, with the Danube cutting straight through the middle of it all.
The beautiful rolling streets, and the historic buildings of Buda and Pest enticed me. I wandered through with the group, enjoying sunshine and soaking in the culture and atmosphere of the history filled city.
Vienna: Schönbrunn and Hofburg
Vienna was my favourite day. The itinerary included two visits: Schönbrunn Palace, with its endless gilded rooms and immaculate gardens, and the Hofburg Palace, where the Sisi Museum gave me a proper sense of the woman behind the myth of Empress Elisabeth. Another history filled day, with lots of scenery and views to remember.
Dürnstein and the Krem Winery
Due to the low water levels of the Danube, the itinerary was amended to show us more of the beautiful countries we were passing through. Luckily, we were able to go ahead with the cruise as the boats are adapted to sail in low water levels. On one day, we visited Dürnstein, a culture filled town with charming shops, and narrow streets. Afterwards, we headed to Krem Winery, where we enjoyed a full tour of the winery, and the cellars underneath.
Is this Danube river cruise right for you?
My take: it suits anyone who wants the pace of a cruise (unpack once, wake up somewhere new) without giving up the depth of a proper city break. Melk Abbey and Vienna give you the grand, gilded side of Central Europe, while Budapest and the smaller stops in between add the local colour and culture that make a trip feel like more than a checklist of landmarks. Flights from London Heathrow, transfers and the excursions mentioned above are all included, so there's very little to plan beyond packing.
