Travellers Diary – Menorca Walking Holiday in September: Our Guest’s Verdict
Martin has gone back to Menorca, and told us all about it. He wants to tell everyone who's ever wondered whether you should return to a place you loved when you were younger that the answer is yes. Forty-six years after his first visit with friends in the '80s, Martin joined our guided walking week in Son Bou this September. He found an island that has kept its turquoise coves, wild coastline and unspoilt charm, and he saw it in a whole new way on foot. Here's his story, in his own words.
They say you should never go back. Well whoever ‘they’ are, they would certainly be wrong in this instance. It was some 46 years ago - when in our mid 20s – I visited Menorca with a group of friends and so there were bound to be some changes, not only to the island but perhaps also in me – given that in those days the furthest I would walk was to the bar! So yes, the island has changed in terms of development and visitor numbers have consequently soared but it really is a must see destination - particularly when you do it on foot. A pastime I now enjoy.
Lovely holiday, great walks don’t change them! Guide excellent as usual. Hotel nice, good food and very helpful staff.
A spare week in my diary in September coincided with the opportunity to travel with a friend and join an Involved Holidays’ walking group based in Son Bou, Menorca; this was led by their incredibly enthusiastic and knowledgeable local guide, Javier. His knowledge extends to all aspects of his native island, its geography and geology, along with its flora and fauna. He proudly pointed out Egyptian Vultures, Booted Eagles and Red Kites soaring high above us as we walked along the Cami de Cavalls admiring clusters of sea daffodils and golden samphire growing in the sand in this highly protected natural paradise.
Our walks took us to the north, south and southwest allowing us to see some of the almost inaccessible beaches and turquoise coves, often referred to as the Menorcan Caribbean - which is totally understandable given the colours of the crystal clear water, which were every imaginable shade of blue - and were so inviting.
Our free days provided the opportunity to take a wander down memory lane, revisiting some of the haunts last seen back in the ‘80s. The island has resisted mass tourism; and yes, one or two places have changed - but then clearly, I have too.
We enjoyed our two free days exploring the rest of the island giving us a good mix. Javier was an excellent, informative host who looked out for us throughout our walks.
The September weather was more than kind - no rain and temperatures hitting 30 degrees. The hotel met all expectations in terms of location, accommodation and food; and the pre dinner sunsets enjoyed from the terrace were so memorable - all of which helped recharge our batteries ready for our walk the following day. All in all it was a simply perfect week, combining an excellent hotel, superb scenic walks led by a brilliant guide - and a walk down memory lane too. It’s highly unlikely that I can wait another 46 years before revisiting Menorca – so maybe I’ll return in the spring time; meanwhile, I thoroughly recommend this walking week with Involved Holidays.

Martin doesn't plan to wait another 46 years to go back, and we don't think you should wait either. Our guide Javier is so sought after that we can only offer one date for this walking week, so places will go quickly. Take a look at the holiday below and book your place before it's gone.
