About this holiday

Looking for a walking holiday in Mijas?

Set high on the mountainside at around 1,475 feet (450 metres) above the Mediterranean, Mijas Pueblo is a charming white-washed village that still feels wonderfully traditional. Its maze of narrow streets, colourful flower-filled balconies and small artisan shops give it a slow, timeless rhythm, all framed by sweeping views over the coast and countryside. Despite being only minutes from the lively Costa del Sol, the village has held on to its peaceful, old-Andalusian character.

The dramatic Sierra de Mijas rises directly behind the village, its marble and limestone slopes carved with deep valleys and dotted with pine forest, herbs and wildflowers. A network of accessible walking routes offers everything from gentle strolls to more adventurous trails, each revealing quiet viewpoints, cooling shade and uninterrupted vistas of the Mediterranean. Birdlife is plentiful, and on clear days you can often see right across to the Rif Mountains of Morocco.

In the heart of the village, the folk museum introduces visitors to local traditions and houses an impressive collection of Picasso’s ceramic works, complemented by pieces from Dali and Miró. With Picasso born just down the road in Malaga, it’s easy to continue the artistic theme with a visit to the excellent Picasso Museum, or simply spend a day exploring Malaga’s historic centre and vibrant harbour. And for those who prefer sand and sea, the resort town of Fuengirola lies close by, offering an easy, relaxing beach escape.

Itinerary

Flight to Malaga, transfer to Mijas (30 minutes) and your hotel for seven nights half board accommodation.
5 MILES – 400M ASCENT/DESCENT Mijas and the Sierra. Your first walk starts and finishes at the hotel, beginning with an introduction to Mijas itself, with its narrow alleys, broad squares, and the ‘Camino del Calvario’ a pilgrims’ path of the Way of the Cross up to the Hermitage (built-in 1710 as a refuge for Carmelite monks), situated on the side of the Sierra, from where there are superb views over the coast. Your route goes to the Mission Cross and through an abandoned marble quarry. The landscape varies as you go, offering firstly herbs and lavender, and then eucalyptus and pines. You re enter Mijas and head through the town back towards the hotel. Today’s walk is 5 miles, 400m of ascent/descent.
Free day in resort. Why not take a trip to nearby Malaga the birthplace of Picasso.
5 MILES – 350M ASCENT/DESCENT You will head northeast and visit the quarry near the hotel, if you are lucky, you will be able to see ibex and their young. After the quarry, before your decent back to your Mijas Hotel, following a path you can enjoy magnificent views towards Africa.
Free day in resort . Why not spend a day at the seaside in nearby Fuengirola.
5 MILES – 500M ASCENT Calamorro and the old path to Mijas. There will be a 20-minute transfer to start your walk near Benalmadena Pueblo, a pretty town in the hills. The trail follows a ridge – on a clear day you can see Gibraltar and Africa! Your destination is Calamorro, from where the cable car whisks you 3km back down the mountain to ‘civilization’! At the bottom there will be a further short, level walk (approx 30 minutes). Today’s walk is 5 miles, 500m ascent (descent by cable car).
Free day in resort.
Free time until departure for Malaga airport.
