Discover walking in Lake Maggiore
Lake Maggiore is Italy’s second largest lake, which stretches north from Lombardy and up into Switzerland. It lies, sheltered, on the southern side of the Alps, resulting in more of a mild climate and consequent lush vegetation, with Mediterranean and exotic flora, including azaleas, rhododendrons, and camellias. Lake Maggiore has been said to be more scenic than, for example, the much larger Lake Garda to the East.
On this holiday, discover the gentle charm of Lake Maggiore on three relaxed walks that blend lake views, historic hamlets and plenty of time to unwind.
On the day of your first walk, start with a short train ride, which brings you to Fondotoce for a steady climb to Montorfano, rewarded with wonderful views before a gentle descent into peaceful Mergozzo, where you can explore and enjoy lunch by the lake.
Another day takes you across the bay to Suna, with its medieval lanes and old mule track leading past orchards, villas and a 14th-century tower before reaching Cavandone, the “Village of Stone Carvings,” and looping back by a different path. The final walk starts in Belgirate, following woodland trails through quiet hamlets before descending into elegant Stresa for lunch and a lakeside wander.
Free days offer time to relax or join optional excursions to the Borromean Islands or the enchanting Lake Orta.
