About this holiday
Bellingham, near Hexham, is your gateway to one of England's most dramatic and storied landscapes. Perfectly positioned for walkers, it puts the sweeping remote moors of Northumberland National Park right on your doorstep — along with the awe-inspiring legacy of Hadrian's Wall.
Built by the Romans in the 2nd century AD to mark the very edge of their empire, Hadrian's Wall is nothing short of monumental — a full-size fort every five miles, stretching boldly across the horizon. Today, this UNESCO World Heritage Site rewards visitors with mile after mile of standing walls and remarkably preserved forts, all waiting to be explored along the iconic 84-mile Hadrian's Wall Path, winding from England's west coast to its east.
During your walking holiday along Hadrian’s Wall, your guide will lead you to some of its most remarkable features, including charming villages set amidst stunning scenery. Your first walk begins at Steel Rigg, offering panoramic views of Northumberland National Park, before moving on to Sycamore Gap. While the once-famous “Tree of the Year” (2016) is no longer standing due to vandalism, the site remains a striking location, celebrated for its appearances in films such as Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, as well as for photography and stargazing. You will then visit Housesteads, one of the best-preserved Roman forts, followed by Vindolanda, renowned for its remarkable artifacts, and conclude at Brocolitia Roman Temple, home to the remains of a temple dedicated to the god Mithras.
Your second walk starts in the historic village of Corbridge and continues to Humshaugh, following a scenic stretch of the Wall. Humshaugh is a picturesque village featuring Haughton Castle, a 14th-century hall house considered one of the best-preserved in northern England. This combination of dramatic landscapes, rich history, and fascinating archaeological sites makes for an unforgettable walking holiday along one of Britain’s most iconic landmarks.
