Five Romanian Dishes You Need to Try

In the beautiful country of Romania, food is far more than sustenance – it’s a living expression of history, hospitality, and heritage. Mămăligă (Romanian Polenta)

Mici (Grilled Minced Meat)

Also called mititei, these are small, skinless sausages made from a mix of ground beef, pork, and lamb. They are seasoned with garlic, thyme, and spices . Chefs grill them until they are juicy. You eat them straight off the grill with spicy mustard and a slice of bread.

Ciorbă de Fasole cu Ciolan

This is a famous and filling smoked ham and bean soup. It is a very thick soup (ciobra) packed with beans, smoked pork, and vegetables. It is often served inside a hollowed-out, crusty bread bowl.

Papanași

This is the most famous Romanian dessert . It is a fried doughnut made from sweet cottage cheese, flour, and eggs . The dessert has two parts: a large doughnut base and a smaller ball on top. Servers top the treat with tangy sour cream and sweet blueberry or cherry jam.

Sarmale (Cabbage Rolls)

Think of these as the national dish of Romania. They are made by rolling minced pork, rice, and onions inside sour cabbage leaves . The rolls simmer for hours in a rich tomato sauce . They are usually served hot with creamy polenta and a scoop of sour cream.
