Portuguese peri peri chicken is all about bold, zesty flavour. This fiery marinade blends garlic, lemon, olive oil, smoked paprika, and peri peri chillies—small but mighty! Left to soak in all that goodness, the chicken is then grilled to perfection. Fancy a taste of Portugal at home?

Try the recipe below and bring a little sunshine to your table. It’s perfect served with crisp salad, warm bread, or roasted veg. You can dial up the heat or keep it mild to suit your taste. Either way, it’s bursting with flavour in every bite!

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 1–2 red chillies (adjust to taste), finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar
  • Salt to taste

Method

  • Combine all ingredients in a bowl.
  • Rub over chicken pieces (breast, thighs or drumsticks work well).
  • Marinate for at least 1 hour (or overnight for deeper flavour).
  • Grill, roast or pan-fry until golden and cooked through.

Serve with rice, salad, or roast potatoes – and imagine you’re dining al fresco in the Algarve.
