Walk 1

This was our first venture up into the hills and mountains and through the villages of Mecina Fondales, Portugos and Pitres. The scenery simply took the breath away.

Walk 2

This walk began from Lanjaron. After walking out of the village, almost immediately we left the road and began the ascent to the ermitas at the top of the nearby hill. It was a long and winding ascent, but well worth it. The views were tremendous and the village was laid out below us. We then followed an acequia and “The Fish Road” downhill. The Fish Road was used by local fishermen to bring their catch up to Lanjaron. Along the way, the vegetation and olive groves were idyllic, watered by opening gates in the acequias at different times of the day.

After a few more ups and downs, we came to the Arab castle perched high on a rocky outcrop below Lanjaron. The climb up to the castle was hard work in the heat of the day, but well worth it.

Fantastic.

Walk 3

Today’s walk began with a 1-hour drive high into the hills of La Poqueira valley in the Sierra Nevada. After leaving the vehicles at the side of the “road” (LOL), we followed mountain tracks as we climbed through the flower-clad slopes that faced the far-away snow-capped mountains that overlook Granada.

After taking a lunch break at a mountain “refugio”, we climbed higher still until we reached an acequia that runs for hundreds, if not thousands, of kilometres. The head of water creates a force that actually makes the acequias run uphill in places.

Along the way we saw booted eagles and Ibex, but not close enough for my bridge camera.

We finished the walk through a pine plantation and then descended to the vehicles for the drive back. However, we did stop off in Capileira for a well-earned beer and tapas.
