Michalis loves the great outdoors and is always on the look out for a new adventure.
Q: Where is your favourite place to walk and why?
Michalis: I like to walk in nature in general, mountains and lowlands as well. All outdoor activities are a form of relaxation for me, but it is also a hobby and a nice way to spend my time and to socialise with others.
Q: How long have you been a walking guide?
Michalis: My first professional involvement as a walking guide started in 1998, cooperating with a local outdoor activity office as a full-time employee. Since then I am busy in this field almost every summer, mostly part time, as a walking guide.
Q: What food would you recommend to take on a walk?
Michalis: Raisins and nuts as a mix of 250 gr, or a combination of those in a Greek recipe, in the form of a food bar called “pasteli” which is a sesame seed sweet bar made from sesame seeds, honey and sometimes nuts. This provides the necessary energy for a day’s hike. I always carry 1 litre of water as a minimum. My goal is to have light weight bio food, so as not to burden me and of small volume for more space in my backpack.
Q: How far do you normally walk in a week?
Michalis: I would say 15 to 20 km a week, but that depends.
Q: Do you use any specialist equipment?
Michalis: No not really, in the summer I am always wearing a boonie cap, my buff scarf (snood) and a breathable shirt.
Q: How fit do you need to be to go on our walking holiday?
Michalis: For an everyday walking tour, of an average 4 hours walk, one can be a fit weekend hiker.
A: Do you walk in all weathers?
Michalis: Yes, As a walking guide, I am walking in all weathers except snowy conditions.
Q: What to wear on a walking holiday?
Michalis: Breathable light weight synthetic garments are the best. Summer walk; a breathable t-shirt and hiking/trekking long trousers and a hat. In winter time light weight quick dry synthetic materials as under garments, and a Gore-Tex lightweight rain jacket.
Q: What one item should you always pack for a walking holiday? (Not walking boots)
Michalis: A basic equipped, first-aid kit.
Q: Where was the last place you went on holiday?
Michalis: To the Greek island of Andros.
Michalis will be escorting our groups this Spring & Autumn across all dates on “Walking In Crete”.
