Walking in Portugal – Cascais & the Sintra Natural Park

Explore the Western Algarve from Monte Estoril. Discover three guided walks through Sintra-Cascais Natural Park's stunning landscapes, historic villages, and coastal cliffs.

Looking for a Walking Holiday in Portugal?

Your hotel is perfectly situated in Monte Estoril, tucked between the elegant resorts of Estoril and Cascais along Portugal’s sparkling Lisbon Coast. Estoril, famous for its grand Belle Époque casino and stylish villas, exudes a sense of refined tradition, while Cascais, once a quiet fishing village, has grown into a lively seaside town full of charm, with narrow streets, bustling markets, and vibrant cafés. A scenic seafront promenade links the two, making it easy to explore either town on foot - your hotel is just a 20-minute stroll from the heart of each - or you can take one of the frequent local buses for a leisurely ride along the coast.

This region is more than just a seaside escape. With its enchanting palaces, beautifully kept gardens, and quiet hermitages, as well as the traditional villages and towns scattered through the hills, the area is celebrated as a ‘cultural landscape’ worthy of UNESCO World Heritage recognition.

From your base in Monte Estoril, you will enjoy three guided walks in the stunning Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. Each walk is carefully designed to reveal a different aspect of this varied countryside - from rugged cliffs and hidden coves to lush forested valleys and charming rural villages. The short coach transfer of around 10 miles to each walk allows you to rest and enjoy the scenery before setting off. Along the way, your guides will share insights into the local flora and fauna, as well as the region’s history and traditions, giving you a deeper sense of place.

When you’re not walking, there’s plenty of time to relax and soak up the coastal ambiance. Stroll along the beaches, enjoy a coffee in a sun-drenched café, or browse the shops and art galleries of Estoril and Cascais. A short train ride will take you into Lisbon, where the city’s sights, sounds, and flavours beckon. From the winding, cobbled streets of Alfama to the bustling squares and elegant avenues, Lisbon offers a rich tapestry of history, architecture, and modern culture. Everywhere you go, you’ll see reminders of the city’s Age of Discovery, when Portuguese explorers opened trade routes to India, Brazil, China, and Japan in the 15th century. Taste traditional pastries, sample fresh seafood, and discover charming viewpoints overlooking the terracotta rooftops of this vibrant city.

Whether wandering through historic streets, taking in panoramic coastal views, or relaxing in a seaside café, this holiday offers the perfect balance of exploration, culture, and tranquillity, leaving you with lasting memories of Portugal’s stunning coastline and rich heritage.

Sir Francis Cook continued the work in the gardens and restored the Palace, which is a delightful mix of Moorish, Romantic, Gothic and even Indian styles.
