Walking the Camino de Santiago

Walk the legendary Camino de Santiago independently, completing the final stages through Galicia, scenic villages and ancient trails, enjoying freedom and reflection.

Walking the Camino de Santiago - Self-Guided

For centuries, the Camino de Santiago has been one of Christianity’s most revered pilgrimage routes. With origins dating back to the 9th century, this ancient path leads to Santiago de Compostela, the final resting place of Saint James, one of Christ’s apostles. Pilgrims from around the world have followed its paths for over a thousand years, drawn by faith, history, and the spiritual transformation that the journey offers. Along with Rome and JerusalemSantiago de Compostela is one of the three most important Christian pilgrimage sites, with the cathedral housing the relics of Saint James, making it a sacred destination for believers of all backgrounds.

This journey will take you on the last 130 kilometres of the Camino, starting in the picturesque village of Samos. From here, you’ll embark on a 6-day adventure through Galicia, a lush region of Spain, experiencing its serene villages, shady forests, and peaceful rural landscapes. The well-marked Camino trails provide a blend of natural beauty and historical landmarks, guiding you through tranquil countryside, ancient towns, and sacred sites that tell the stories of centuries of pilgrims. Alongside fellow travellers from all over the globe, you’ll walk the same paths that have connected people in faith, fellowship, and reflection for generations.

The path offers more than just a physical journey. Each day you’ll cover approximately 20-25 kilometres, gradually making your way through towns like SarriaPortomarínPalas de ReiArzúa, and A Rúa, before reaching your final destination, Santiago de Compostela. As you walk, you will feel the Camino’s spiritual nature all around you.

Along the way, you’ll encounter a range of sights and experiences. In Sarria, the starting point for many Spanish pilgrims, you’ll find your first steps towards the iconic pilgrimage. The route takes you through Portomarín, a town that was completely submerged in 1962 and rebuilt stone by stone, preserving its historical and architectural significance. As you continue, you’ll cross scenic forests and rolling hills, pass traditional hórreos (Galician granaries), and walk along peaceful country roads. Each town along the way has its own character and story to tell, adding depth and meaning to your experience.

Many travellers find that the Camino is not only a journey towards Santiago, but also an inward journey of self-discovery, as the path invites quiet contemplation and spiritual renewal.

By the time you reach Santiago de Compostela, the iconic cathedral will come into view, a symbol of your dedication and the culmination of your pilgrimage. Here, you can attend the Pilgrim Mass, receive your Compostela (pilgrim’s certificate), and take a moment to reflect on the profound experience you’ve just completed. Whether you are on a spiritual journey, seeking personal transformation, or simply enjoying the beauty and history of the Camino, the experience is one that will stay with you long after you have returned home.
